Fes matemàtiques Mathematics is one thing and many things at once. It is the basic language of science and technology – a language that is universally valid and always current, without which the advances of modern society would be impossible. This has never been truer than it is today, as we witness a veritable explosion in the application of mathematical models in numerous fields of science, technology, the humanities, etc. Mathematics clearly plays an essential role in the information and communication society. Data processing and statistics play an important role in practically all fields of science. But mathematics is also research – interdisciplinary and application-oriented, or motivated by mathematics itself. As an intellectual activity, mathematics research is also creation, discovery, exploration and even passion. It is a proven fact – one which has even become a stereotype – that mathematics stimulates and strengthens intellectual qualities such as the capacity for analysis and assimilation and the ability to deeply penetrate the structure of things and problems.

The book

For students who are passionate about mathematics or statistics, the Autonomous University of Barcelona is the ideal place to study. The UAB offers the following degrees, among others:

  • Degree in Mathematics. This four-year programme aims to provide students with a solid mathematical education. The first cycle focuses on general mathematics training. The second cycle continues with this training, while at the same time encouraging students to think about their professional future and giving them the opportunity to complement their training with other subjects. The programme’s ‘practical’ credits – problem-solving subjects and practical sessions in the classroom or computer laboratory – involve group work under the close supervision of the lecturer.
  • Degree in Applied Statistics. This three-year programme trains mid-level experts in data analysis. Students can choose from among several specialisations: General Statistics, Statistics Applied to Industry (Quality Control), Statistics Applied to Economic Analysis, Statistics Applied to Health Sciences, etc.

The UAB’s Department of Mathematics also offers excellent third-cycle courses (master’s and doctorate programmes) that prepare students for specific professions.
