Open Education Week 2024

Open Education Week 2024 is an annual global initiative that takes place from March 4 to 8. It aims to raise awareness about the advantages that the implementation of both open educational practices and open educational resources brings to society.

We invite you to participate in the activity we have prepared this year:

3 innovative experiences in open education

Date: Monday, March 4, 2024

Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Location: telepresence via Teams

Aimed at: PDI and 3rd cycle students

Modality: telepresence through Teams

Certificates: certificates of attendance will be delivered

Organized by: Library Service

Description: In this activity, 3 professors from different departments of the UAB will present 3 projects that have in common their involvement with innovation in the classroom and their commitment to open education.

The projects are the following:

From the classroom to the gaming table: building shared knowledge through the PhyloGenome project

OEW

Description: PhyloGenome is a teaching innovation project that merges the learning of genomics with the dynamics of a collectible card game. Throughout the course, students work on the sequencing, assembly, and annotation of a genome of a eukaryotic species of interest, in parallel with the evolution of the other activities of the subject. In the end, they create a card that highlights the most relevant information from the genome investigated. The card design and main dynamics of the game are based on the participatory, open access card game PhyloGame. It is also possible to play following the dynamics of the Nature games Challenge and Timeline, turning PhyloGenome into three games in one. PhyloGenome has its own website (phylogenome.omicsuab.org) where all cards and related materials can be downloaded. Furthermore, through the website itself the educational community can contribute with new cards, making PhyloGenome a cooperative and international project in constant growth. All materials are distributed under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-SA license. During the talk, it will be explained where the PhyloGenome project came from and how it has been developed, as well as its contribution to student learning and its social impact.

Tahina -Can Expedition: The trip as an educational tool

OEW

Description: Explanation of the Tahina -Can Expedition (www.tahina-can.org), organized by the Master in Travel Journalism at the UAB. It is an innovative experience in education that emphasizes the formative value of the journey, the journey to the other and the introspective journey. It reflects on adventure, exploration and the path as a tool and path of teaching and learning. Based on experiences and encounters in more than 10 countries around the world derived from the Expedition and other trips, a particular tour of the educational world will be taken to emphasize that, perhaps, we are equal in our differences.

Open Educational Resources (OER) created with the Playful Methodology Learning

OEW

Description: Playful Learning UAB represents a project in which creation, collaboration and play converge to address educational challenges in our environment. Final Degree and Master's Thesis students collaborate to face local challenges, from the needs of the Palau-solità and Plegamans town hall to the challenges on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. We adopt the co-creation philosophy of the UAB Open Labs, encouraging collaboration, prototyping and validation of ideas in an open and participatory environment. From ideation to prototyping, our process involves both target audiences and experts to ensure our solutions are authentic and effective. All educational materials generated are shared openly on our website, the UAB repository and Sketchfab, among other platforms. It is essential that students understand the importance of publishing open educational materials, aimed at ensuring global access to education, encouraging collaboration and continuous improvement, as well as promoting innovation through the adaptation of pedagogical methodologies, facilitating a more inclusive and personalized education.
