For the third year in a row, the UAB continues to find itself among the top 201 to 300 universities in the world according to the latest edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking. This ranking analyses over 1800 universities from around the world and publishes a ranking of the top 1000 higher education institutions.

This means that the UAB is the second best-positioned university in Catalonia, behind the University of Barcelona, and also ranks second in Spain (tied with the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the University of Valencia and the Autonomous University of Madrid). The following section (301-400) of the ranking includes the University of the Basque Country and the Pompeu Fabra University.

Once again, the global ranking is topped by American universities. First, second and third position go to Harvard, Stanford and MIT, while the University of Cambirdge, first in Europe, is fourth in the ranking.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003. The ARWU takes into account six objective indicators in its classification of universities: the number of students and professors with a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of high impact scientific articles selected by Thomson Reuters, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, the number of articles in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and the relative performance of each university.
