The POSTGRADUATE SPECIALIZATION DIPLOMA IN GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE is a study by the Department of Political Science and Public Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Barcelona Provincial Council (Area of Feminisms and Equality), which aims to offer specialized training in the area of gender-based violence, including phenomena that go beyond violence in intimate partner relationships. This study is pioneering in the study of the set of gender-based violence against women, such as sexual violence, human trafficking, etc.

Furthermore, it is fundamentally a legal training, which also gives this specialty a distinctive feature, given that most training on violence against women has a psychosocial character. Legal training becomes essential to understand and intervene in a highly juridified field, such as gender-based violence (both internationally and nationally).

The educational objective of these studies is to provide legal training to jurists and other professionals with university studies, familiar with gender-based violence but lacking socio-legal tools.

The studies are mainly aimed at training students in the following aspects:

Conceptualization and contextualization of gender-based violence
Violations of fundamental rights
Legislation on gender-based violence
Intervention, prevention, detection, and intervention in cases of gender-based violence
The Department of Political Science and Public Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the consolidated SRG group Antígona: Law and Society in a Gender Perspective offer training in the field of gender studies and in recent years have developed various international and national research projects in the field of gender-based violence.

Career opportunities

Local authorities.
The various interventions made by local authorities in the area of gender-based violence (specific counselling, assistance and recovery services; plans for countering gender-based violence; intervention protocols; preventive measures, etc.) mean there is a need for specially trained professionals. Under the 3/2007 Law on Equality this will become even clearer. In fact, town councils are already taking on specialists in this field.

Specialist institutions at autonomous community level.
There are specific public institutions, like the Catalan Institute for Women, and government ministries, with clearly-defined competences in this area, like those of justice, interior and welfare, which are actively involved in this area and which need professionals with a sound socio-juridical background in gender-based violence.

Private companies and unions.
Some forms of gender-based violence have a clear impact on the workplace, such as intimate partner violence and sexual harassment. In both cases specific legal interventions are stipulated, which require professional expertise.

Associations.
The network of associations is of particular interest to those who can approach gender-based violence from a socio-juridical perspective.

Professionals in general.
Professionals in any field wishing to specialise in gender-based violence

Internships

The objective of the internship is to apply in reality all the theoretical knowledge acquired during the specialization diploma in Gender-Based Violence.

Throughout the 100 hours of internship, students will see how work is done regarding gender-based violence, whether from the public sector (institutions) or private sector (law firms, third sector entities) performing tasks of documentation, systematization, research, or accompaniment with a feminist and intersectional perspective.

In the case of doing the internship in an institution, the student will follow up on public policies developed in relation to gender-based violence. They will also be able to support the technicians in case management and addressing the problems of the users, as well as in the design and implementation of activities.

If the internship is done in a law firm, students will be able to observe the entire judicial process that women victims of gender-based violence go through.

If the internship is chosen in a research group, they will support research in different projects.

When choosing a third sector entity, the main tasks will be the social or psychological accompaniment of women victims of gender-based violence. Secondarily, they will also be able to support the preparation of events framed within November 25th, group activities, or research projects.
