The Diploma of Specialization in Gender and Equality is a program offered by the Department of Political Science and Public Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Barcelona Provincial Council (Feminism and Equality Area). Its purpose is to provide specialized training, from the disciplines involved, in the field of gender studies—an area that has traditionally not been sufficiently reflected in specialized curricula. Additionally, it is primarily a legal training, which gives this specialty a distinctive feature, since most gender and equality education is humanistic in nature.

The program is designed for individuals with a university degree who wish to acquire and deepen their knowledge in gender studies, whether they come from the legal field or other areas.

The studies mainly aim to provide training in the following aspects:
- Conceptualization and contextualization of equality policies.
- Legislation on equality and non-discrimination.
- Technical intervention in the development of programs, measures, and public policies with a gender perspective, as outlined in legislation and specific plans in our country.
- Application of measures and consultancy in the preparation of gender audits in the public, private, and third sectors.
- Intervention as gender equality specialists in the public, private, and third sectors.
- Development and consultancy on equality plans in the public, private, and third sectors.

The Department of Political Science and Public Law at UAB and the Antígona group (consolidated SRG Antígona: law and society from a gender perspective), responsible for this Diploma of Specialization, have been providing training for over 20 years, both nationally and internationally, in the field of gender studies.

Career opportunities

Local Administration:
Currently, the role of gender equality agent is being promoted, and with the application of Organic Law 3/2007 on Equality, this role becomes a clear necessity. In fact, at the local level, municipalities are one of the areas where gender specialists have been increasingly integrated. Therefore, the inclusion of such professionals within public administration is already a reality, and as in countries with a longer tradition of gender studies, these professionals will become even more important.

Specialized Institutions:
There are specific public institutions, such as the Catalan Institute for Women in Catalonia, that are characterized by fostering and promoting awareness about gender equality. There are also specific areas in some institutions, like the Women's and LGTBI Office, which carry out activities to promote equality. These are spaces where professionals who complete this Diploma of Specialization can be incorporated.

Private Companies and Trade Unions:
Some measures, especially those aimed at reconciling work and family life, have been incorporated into the practices of some companies. Likewise, equality plans and gender audits are measures that are beginning to be developed, where gender equality technicians have job positions.

The Associative World:
The associative sector is of significant interest for individuals who are able to detect problems, offer responses, discuss and analyze policies, develop budgets, etc., in the field of inequalities and discrimination between women and men.

Professionals in General:
Professionals from any field who wish to specialize in gender policies.

Internships

The objective of the internships is to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the specialization diploma in Gender and Equality. Throughout the 100 hours of internships, students will see how work is done towards equality or public policies, either from the public sector (institutions) or private sector (organizations or entities of the third sector), performing tasks of documentation, systematization, or research with an intersectional and transversal gender perspective.

Activities:
Primarily, students will participate in the development, design, or evaluation of equality plans, whether internal or external, application of gender mainstreaming, or linkage to projects. If opting for internships in the private sector, students will participate in the development, design, or evaluation of the equality plan or harassment protocol. Internships can also be linked to applying gender mainstreaming in training projects or in monitoring contributions made to municipal areas for the incorporation of gender perspective in grants, ordinances, contract specifications, etc. If students carry out internships in a consultancy, they will participate in active projects upon their incorporation, such as requests from municipalities or other public or private services. If choosing to do them in a research group, they will support research in different research projects. If choosing an entity of the third sector, they will collaborate in organizing activities, participation, transcription, documentation review, or participate in projects and activities related to gender, such as the eco-social crisis, climate emergency from ecofeminism, or defense of women's human rights in general.
