This course is aimed at early childhood education teachers who wish to improve both their knowledge of science education and their knowledge of mathematics education. The course will focus on scientific and mathematical knowledge and processes, their teaching and learning trajectories, as well as the development of practical and interdisciplinary proposals.
Scientific and mathematical education for young children is one of the pillars of todays educational system.
Developing competencies related to school science and mathematics involves being able to design learning situations that allow children not only to work on curricular knowledge, but also to develop scientific models and specific mathematical processes. To do this, however, it is necessary to master, among other aspects, scientific-mathematical content and its didactics.
This course will address four main areas, combining an initial theoretical approach with subsequent practical application. The first area will be the development of students scientific-mathematical competence in early childhood education. The second will address the progression of knowledge in this stage, that is, which science and mathematics content should be worked on and with what didactic trajectory it can be built. The third area will focus on the progression of scientific-mathematical processes in the classroom and how these are strengthened throughout early childhood education. Finally, the fourth area will be based on the analysis of real and interdisciplinary proposals that will allow us to integrate the previous three areas.
- Key ideas, knowledge, and processes for developing scientific competence
- Key ideas, knowledge, and processes for developing mathematical competence
- Didactic strategies to promote strong scientific-mathematical proposals in early childhood education
- Practical experiences to promote strong scientific-mathematical proposals in early childhood education
- Experimentation and analysis of scientific-mathematical proposals in early childhood education
