This microcredential offers specialized training in a scientific and professional discipline that applies the methodologies of physical anthropology and genetics to the identification of victims in medico-legal and humanitarian contexts. It is a unique training proposal, aimed at the acquisition of practical and theoretical skills in a field of high social and scientific impact.
In situations of massive disasters - such as armed conflicts, natural disasters, accidents or migratory crises -, the intervention of forensic professionals is essential to guarantee the identification of victims, the return to their families and a dignified burial. In Catalonia, the exhumations of mass graves from the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship exemplify how multidisciplinary forensic teams (anthropologists, archaeologists, geneticists, odontologists, psychologists, historians, etc.) contribute to historical reparation and the defense of human rights.
The course, which is practical in nature and carries 3 ECTS, is taught at the Faculty of Biosciences of the UAB. It combines theoretical sessions, laboratory practices and specialized seminars. Students will work with real skeletal remains, applying morphoscopic, morphometric and genomic techniques to address cases of human identification and reconstruction of the circumstances of death. Teamwork and the simulation of real interventions allow the acquisition of skills applied in current forensic contexts.
The seminars complement the training with a critical reflection on the role of forensic anthropology in justice, historical memory and human rights. The course has expert teaching staff from the UAB and invited professionals from renowned public and private institutions, such as the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Catalonia, the Directorate General of Democratic Memory, the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia, and archaeology companies such as ILTIRTA and ATICS.
