Master's Degree in European Surgical Oncology; Reconstructive and Aesthetic Breast Surgery (English)
IntroductionBreast surgery is a sub-specialisation of plastic surgery that is in growing demand, mainly due to the high prevalence of breast cancer. Although breast reconstruction is a regular practice in all hospitals with plastic surgeons, it is nonetheless a complex procedure that demands expertise. The multidisciplinary treatment of breast cancer makes it necessary for breast reconstruction surgeons to have knowledge of oncology as well as reconstruction: a global approach that means that patients can be given personalised treatment, thus minimising the risk of complications. Similarly, in private-practice aesthetic surgery, breast-related procedures (augmentation mammoplasty, reduction mammoplasty, mastopexy etc.) are those in greatest demand.
Breast reconstruction is a complex procedure that requires mastery of a wide range of surgical techniques and highly advanced training in some cases (microsurgery techniques), which is not available on all specialist training programmes or in all hospitals.
In addition, plastic surgeons involved in breast surgery must have a sound knowledge of surgical oncology. This allows them to provide a global treatment for breast cancer, offering the possibility of immediate tumour resection surgery and breast reconstruction in a single surgical session, thus minimising complications.
The Master's Degree in Oncological, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Breast Surgery is therefore a highly specialised profession-oriented degree that aims to help fill the gaps detected in the training of professionals working in this field. It can also contribute to the continuous professional development of plastic surgeons working as private practitioners, given the high demand for aesthetic breast surgery. It should be noted that training in aesthetic surgery is, in general, highly deficient, as it takes up only 3 months of residents' training in Spain and is not even included on training programmes in many European Union countries. For the above reasons this master's degree is expected to be of great interest to practising surgeons.
ObjectivesThe aim of this programme is to provide plastic surgeons with specialist knowledge of all the procedures followed in breast surgery. This includes both oncological, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. As a result, they should be able to adopt a suitable therapeutic approach and acquire the skills needed for high-quality, self-directed clinical care.
