This course provides the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills regarding microbiology, diseases and health monitoring required by designated veterinarians and other onsite personnel responsible for the welfare and care of laboratory animals in the conduct of experimental procedures.
The course looks at the importance of health monitoring and the range of diseases that can affect laboratory animals and how diseases may affect experiment results.
This course also provides practical training in relation to animal biology, euthanasia, and minimally invasive methods.
Contents
- Defining microbiological laboratory animals. Microbiota and its effects.- Introduction to the pathology of laboratory animals.
- Epidemiology of diseases of laboratory animals.
- Diseases in rodents.
- Diseases in rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
- Clinical biochemistry and hematology
- Pathology of dog and cat.
- Pathology of the pig.
- Pathology of ruminants.
- Pathology of nonhuman primates.
- Pathology of fish.
- Health checks: Methodology and interpretation of results.
Practicals: Necropsy, taking samples and analysis in several parasitic species.
