Three independent research designs are developed. First, cross-sectional studies are presented, which are observational designs where a sample of the population is selected to know the frequency of an exposure and/or an effect at a given moment in the natural course.
Secondly, ecological studies are presented, which are observational designs in which aggregated, non-individualized data from the population or populations under study are collected, both of the exposure and the effect.
The third block is dedicated to hybrid studies, which have emerged as a consequence of the limitations of cohort studies and case-control studies, and have given rise to nested case-control studies and case-cohort studies, which attempt to take advantage of the benefits of each of the two basic designs.
