The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 marked a radical shift in access to generative artificial intelligence, with an immediate impact on the field of education. Its ease of use and its ability to generate text and answer questions quickly made it a widely adopted tool among students. Universities in countries such as the United States began integrating it into digital skills training, while debates emerged regarding its ethical and legal implications. In just five months, nearly half of Cambridge students had already used the tool. Unlike other digital resourcessuch as spelling and grammar checkers or writing assistantsgenerative AI tools like ChatGPT have transformed public perceptions of artificial intelligence by providing accessible, fast, and effective text-generation capabilities. Their ability to analyze linguistic parameters and produce coherent, contextually appropriate content far exceeds human capabilities.
In this context, the microcredential begins with a broad overview of generative AI, including its underlying principles, potential applications, and the ethical implications of its use. The aim is for teachers to understand how generative AI works and how it can be effectively integrated into language teaching practices, with particular attention to discourse competence in both written and spoken communication. The program then examines several paradigmatic examples of the transformative impact of generative AI on traditional language-related technologies, including machine translation, voice interaction, text creation, linguistic analysis, and more. In the face of these challenges, the role of the language expert is crucial in ensuring the critical use of these tools, providing specialized linguistic knowledge that helps interpret generated outputs, identify potential errors, and guide learners toward coherent, appropriate, and accurate discourse production.
The course is intended for language and literature teachers, as well as professionals working in education, communication, publishing, content creation, and other fields interested in the applications of generative artificial intelligence to language. It is also designed for anyone interested in developing written and oral discourse competence, understood as a key transversal skill in todays academic, professional, and digital environments.
