Advances in psychopharmacological research and the development of welfare societies have made it possible to create a care network that better meets the needs of people with mental illnesses. This reality requires health professionals to have strong analytical, reflective, and adaptive skills to face the new situations within the healthcare system.
Nurses must receive specific training that provides them with the necessary tools to offer comprehensive, high‑quality care in the biological, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual domains throughout the entire healthillness process.
This master's degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing trains professionals capable of responding to society's demands in the care of people with mental illnesses. It also addresses the training needs of professionals interested in this field and promotes comprehensive care focused on health promotion and prevention, specific care for psychiatric conditions, and bio‑psycho‑social, emotional, and spiritual rehabilitation.
- Work as a case manager or coordinator of social‑health and community resources in primary care, hospital, or mental health settings, ensuring comprehensive, continuous, and person‑centered care.
- Be part of interdisciplinary teams in mental health units, both in hospital settings (acute units, subacute units, liaison psychiatry) and in community resources (adult mental health centers, child and adolescent units, or community rehabilitation teams).
- Lead the management of nursing care in the hospital setting, in psychiatric inpatient units or units for people with dual diagnosis, ensuring the quality, safety, and humanization of care.
- Participate in and lead the management of nursing care in community and social‑health settings, including day hospitals, community mental health units, home‑based follow‑up services, and psychosocial rehabilitation support services.
