Xavier Gabarrell
  • Biography
  • Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and one of six guarantors of the ICTA Maria de
    Maeztu Unit (Unidad de excelencia «María de Maeztu» (MDM-2015-0552)). He has specialised in teaching and research in the field of environmental engineering in the degrees of environmental sciences and chemical engineering, as well as in the programs of Master and doctorate of Bioctecnologia, environmental sciences and environmental studies. He is the head researcher of the research group on  sustainability and environmental protection (, Sostenipra, 2014 SGR 1412). His research in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering, and the ICTA over the past 15 years has focused on environmental biotechnology (waste treatment by fungi, ...), as well as industrial ecology, urban sustainability indicators, sustainability, materials flows of energetics crops, environmental protection, waste management and environmental assessment in the company. He has published more than 140 articles in indexed journals. From the period of 2011-2015 the Sostenipra research group has published 148 articles in indexed journals (another 3 in January 2016). It has participated in 10 international projects, 11 projects funded via European agencies, and over 7 projects that were funded via Spanish agencies. It was also the principal investigator on 1 EU funded project, called Ecotech Sudoe. Over the last five years the research group has supervised 16 doctoral students (listed below) and has been the host to over 18 guest researchers. The research group has also produced two proprietary softwares: edTOOL: web-based tool assisting the ecodesign process of products and services, (English and French version) , software registered at the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP). I-DEPOT and CO2ZW, The Carbon Footprint Tool for Waste management, software registered at the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP). i-DEPOT ref. BOIP: 062509. (26-02-2015). Selected awards received include: The design award for recycling from the Departament Medi Ambient of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2001 and 2013), and The AQUAENVEC project, prize for the best project of European Union (2013).

  • He is involved in International and National Research Projects, frequently as the role of coordinator. During the period 2011-2015 he has been working in 6 European projects: PROSUIT Development and application of standardized methodology for the PROspective SUstainability assessment of TEchnologies, 2009-2013, coordinated by Dr Villalba at UAB; Life+ 08 ENV/Environment Policy and Governance (Innovation) UP grading of landfillGAS for LOWering CO2 emissions (UPGAS-LOWCO2), coordinated by Dr Gabarrell at UAB; ZERO WASTE, Low Cost - Zero Waste Municipality (1GMED08- 533), 2009-2012 also coordinated by Dr Gabarrell at UAB; and ECOTECH-SUDOE, Interreg SOE2/P17E377 (2011-2013), where Dr Gabarrell was the coordinator of the project involving 8 partners; ECO-SCP-MED: Integrating Experiences and Recommendations in Eco-Innovation for Sustainable Production and Consumption in the Mediterranean Area (2013-2015) coordinated by Dr Gabarrell; LIFE10/ENV/ES520. Assessment and improvement of the urban water cycle ecoefficiency using LCA and LCC (AQUAENVEC) coordinated by Dr Rieradevall Pons, (01/01/2012 - 31/05/2015).
    Dr Gabarrell is a member of the Group of Climate Change Experts of Catalonia (GECCC), and responsible for the waste chapter in the First, Second and Third Report on Climate Change in Catalonia.
