Research Group Recognized and Funded, Generalitat of Catalonia, Department of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise. 2009-2013.
GRAFO (Research Group in Fundamental and Oriented Anthropology), aims to contribute to broader theoretical foundation of anthropology, by reflection on the ontological assumptions, epistemological and methodological research that underlie the members of the group, through the effort in the conceptualization and development of instruments that underlie the match between research designs and techniques used and combining theoretical and methodological critique. Another principle was shared valuing particular work aimed at transforming the socio-cultural conditions, with a conception of applied anthropology whose horizon limit the action research, although we are willing to accept varying degrees of approach the limit, always from a position of epistemological critique.
Part of the GRAFO, known as Consolidated Research Group by the Generalitat of Catalonia in the call for 2009 (SGR 2009-0053), researchers from four research groups at the UAB: GRIM, GETP, EGOLAB and MOSSA. Although each has features that identify, the specific investigations carried out with equipment that frequently exceeds the boundaries of the groups.

Epistemology, Research methods and techniques in anthropology and theory of applied anthropology
As a result of the overall objective, this line is central to GRAFO. It tries to develop - from the research group and specific job - criticism and proposals on key issues about the link between basic research and applied areas and in the field of methods, procedures, techniques and ethics of research.
From this perspective the same rank is attributed to cultural studies carried out in different parts of the world, the work of theoretical and transcultural comparative research on the application in substantive areas such as minorities, and health rating education. In this regard we must highlight the progress made in the discussion of the guidelines methods in anthropology in the field of personal networks, with the development of programs for collecting and displaying data and applications in various fields of substantive research in the field of visual anthropology and the theory of applied anthropology.
-
Social networks, community integration, minorities and social exclusion
This research aims to study social networks as a tool for building community ties and an exclusion abastadora theory that explains the great variability of the phenomenon of social exclusion. We especially pay attention to the phenomena of economic, social and civic, of selective acculturation, formalization of ethnic militancy, compatibility or reconstruction of identity and cultural representations of minorities studied.
The ethnography of exclusion in the field allows the statistical hypotheses relating to specific processes in different ethnic minority groups, national (Gypsies) or immigrants. In the context of Gypsy studies have examined the representations and changing cultural patterns, processes of social integration, ethnic relations, ethnic institutionalization of the institutional context in general and administrative and political movements of militant ethnic, religious and civil.
-
Kinship, social organization and processes of transmission and learning
Taking as its starting point the achievements and limitations of classical anthropology of kinship, this line looks to build different models of kin after registering a proposal on the analytical domain of anthropology of kinship. The interest is also at the intersections of the domain of kinship with other domains, such as gender systems, education systems and medical systems relevant.
In the research field are given particular attention to the presence of relatives and relatives in the social networks to try to overcome ethnocentric ideas that led to give a dominant role in the social structure of a family space that supose universal.
Within the field of education GRAFO developed theory and ethnographic research in different educational contexts, populations and territories beyond the classroom, but also in classrooms. Closely related to the cultural reproduction of human groups, the anthropology of education intersects with other domains that are investigated in the group, particularly kinship, but also social exclusion and community integration.

Anthropology applied to health and educational institutions
Several GRAFO's researchers developed lines of work-related representations on the person's health and illness, communication between the different subjects involved in the care and the relationship between the practices of alternation, selection and compatibility of different systems of therapy. In addition to the above and under the line of inquiry into social exclusion, vulnerability study processes of social, economic and cultural situation of the populations at risk of exclusion and cultural difference, the health needs of 'This type of stocks and the possibilities and forms of access to healthcare resources. Other research has focused on the role of social networks and relationships in support of disease processes. In this area are integrated, in addition, research on youth and drug use within the Observatory of New Drugs in the youth field in Catalonia.
In the field of education with regard to applied research on major development is drafting proposals for improving the coexistence in educational, training of education professionals serving immigrants and analysis and creation of standards and educational resources related to issues of intercultural coexistence, migration, development and international cooperation.
It is precisely this goal jointly construct a more general way to understand what anthropology has led us to incorporate GRAFO a significant number of PhD students (in addition to the current group has involved the collaboration of 'other doctoral students who are currently developing their own careers and, consequently, no longer tied). As a general rule, although with some exceptions, those who have adopted or have exceeded the 32 credits of former doctoral program or have completed the Masters in the new organization of postgraduate studies. This ensures their involvement in some of the research group and, along with the practice of participation in each of the phases of design and development projects, makes it possible to combine both training and contributions to methodological and theoretical empirical. These issues are not only specialized aspects of the work of some researchers of the graph, but are also subject to a collective discussion continued.
