The course "Introduction to Sanskrit: Classical and Buddhist. Advanced Concepts" is a continuation of the first course entitled "Introduction to Sanskrit: Classical and Buddhist" at the UAB. Sanskrit is the most important classical language of Asia and the only classical language shared across the entire continent.
Through Buddhism and Hinduism, Sanskrit language and literature have permeated Asian cultures from Mongolia and Tibet to Sri Lanka, and from Afghanistan to Japan. This course constitutes the second level of our Sanskrit studies, and it assumes that students have completed the first level of this language at the UAB or, alternatively, that they possess a basic knowledge of the Devanagari writing system, sandhi, the declension of masculine and neuter nouns ending in -a and feminine nouns ending in -ā, as well as basic syntax for understanding simple sentences in the present or future indicative.
The most notable feature of this course is its incorporation of Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit, which is particularly relevant in the Buddhist literature that spread to China and Japan. This means that grammar topics are expanded and slightly adjusted to include the most distinctive features of Buddhist Sanskrit. This course is ideal for those seeking direct access to the original sources of Asias spiritual and philosophical traditions.
