Modern chip design requires engineers to understand not only digital hardware concepts, but also the languages, modelling approaches and verification methodologies used in current industrial and academic design flows. This short preparatory course is aimed at graduates who wish to follow master-level subjects in chip design and verification and need to ensure a common minimum background before starting more advanced coursework.
The course introduces the essential elements of SystemVerilog for the design of combinational and sequential digital circuits, together with the basic principles of functional verification. It also provides an initial view of the object-oriented features of SystemVerilog used in verification environments, and introduces high-level system design using C++, with particular attention to SystemC and TLM-2.0 modelling.
Students may be interested in this course if they come from electronics, telecommunications, computer engineering, physics, or related degrees and want to strengthen their preparation for master courses dealing with digital systems, integrated circuits, SoC design, hardware verification or embedded systems. The main advantage of taking this course at UAB is that it is directly aligned with the expected entry knowledge for the corresponding master-level subjects. It is therefore conceived as a focused bridge between previous undergraduate training and the practical requirements of advanced chip design education.
The teaching methodology is practical and intensive. Students will work with their own laptops and will use open-source tools for coding, simulation and waveform analysis. This approach makes the learning environment accessible, reproducible and independent of proprietary laboratory infrastructure, while still reflecting the type of tool-based workflow used in digital design and verification.
