Wound care is undoubtedly one of the most common activities carried out by healthcare professionals in different care settings (, GNEAUPP), particularly by nurses. Chronic Wounds (CWs) are defined as wounds that show little or no tendency to heal. This category includes Pressure Ulcers (PUs), Lower Extremity Ulcers, and Diabetic Foot Ulcers. Chronic wounds represent a challenge for clinical nurses due to their complexity and high prevalence.
In Spain, chronic wounds continue to be a major healthcare issue. Their impact affects patients, healthcare services, and society as a whole, which means they should be considered a public health problem. In this regard, they require all the necessary means and resources to ensure appropriate treatment and healing.
The prevention and comprehensive management of patients with chronic wounds is complex. According to Waterlow (1995), pressure ulcers can be prevented in 95% of cases if the appropriate measures described in Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are applied. Evidence shows (Hernández, 2012) that chronic wounds with delayed healing require advanced therapies, and that the training of nursing staff is essential to reduce their incidence, prevent complications, and ensure proper wound management.
Despite the fact that recommendations are clearly established, significant variability in the management of patients with chronic wounds can still be observed in clinical practice. This variability is largely influenced by the training received by healthcare professionals (Vanderwee et al., 2007).
In this module, students will acquire knowledge of the physiology, etiopathology, epidemiology, and consequences of chronic wounds (CWs). They will also develop the competencies required to perform a comprehensive patient assessment and implement appropriate preventive skin care measures, including support and education for caregivers.
Module II: Comprehensive Management of Patients with Pressure Ulcers
This module focuses on the comprehensive management of patients with Pressure Ulcers (PUs). Students will learn about preventive measures and how to effectively communicate them to primary caregivers. The module also covers pressure management strategies, including the use of Special Support Surfaces for Pressure Management (SSPM), as well as general care and preventive interventions.
Module III: Local Management of Chronic Wounds I: Cleansing, Debridement, and Bacterial Load Management
This module provides the knowledge required to deliver appropriate local care for chronic and hard-to-heal wounds. Students will become familiar with the general principles of Moist Wound Healing (MWH), Wound Bed Preparation (WBP), and the TIME framework.
Module IV: Local Management of Chronic Wounds II: Selection of Wound Care Products and Advanced Therapies
In this module, students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform local treatment of chronic and hard-to-heal wounds. They will learn how to select the most appropriate wound care products for exudate management, provide care for the periwound skin, and understand and apply different combinations of wound care products and advanced therapeutic approaches.
Module V: Comprehensive Management of Patients with Lower Extremity Ulcers: Vascular and Diabetic Wounds
This module provides the necessary knowledge to perform a comprehensive assessment and management of patients with lower extremity wounds (LEWs), including vascular ulcers, both venous and arterial, as well as diabetic foot ulcers.
Module VI: Clinical Practice
This module enables students to put into practice the knowledge, attitudes, and skills acquired throughout the program regarding the nursing management of the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds.
- Work as part of interdisciplinary teams responsible for the comprehensive assessment and management of patients at risk of, or suffering from, chronic and hard-to-heal wounds.
- Serve as a reference professional in the prevention and management of chronic and hard-to-heal wounds.
- Participate in committees, consultations, and/or nursing services that provide comprehensive care to individuals at risk of, or affected by, chronic wounds, as well as contribute to the development of clinical protocols and care guidelines.
