E-TROTLE research project granted

WIN and ASAC researchers belonging to the SGR 2021 IDEAS consolidated group of the department collaborate in this 2-year project to exploit synergies in terms of Deep Learning development, industrial control and sustainable operation strategies. More specifically, this project addresses digital innovation into the water sector as one of the key actors of the European Green Deal by promoting the operational improvement of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) from the perspective of use of machine learning based methodologies such as Data-based/Transfer Learning and adoption of ideas from the Digital Twin concept to support and facilitate advanced controller commissioning. The operational improvement is oriented towards achieving sustainable operation and considering environmental impact from a holistic point of view. In this regard, this is an ambitious project that faces the two axes of the so-called Twin Transition: water and digitalization. The benefits of the project are twofold: developing novel scientific results on the analysis and controller design of WWTPs for a respectful environmental operation fully based on available plant data and elaborating the tools for an easy transfer of these results to industry based on virtual commissioning.
