Dr. Miquel Domènech and Dr. Joan Moyà-Köhler, members of the STS-b research group and faculty at the UAB, recently took part in an interview in El Periódico in which they presented one of their ongoing projects, titled “New therapeutic targets in depression: the role of situational perception.” The research, coordinated by the University of Barcelona and funded by the 2024 edition of La Marató de TV3 on mental health, seeks to understand the role of each person’s context in the development and treatment of depression.

The aim of the STS-b group is to create a participatory research space with people who are or have been in situations of depression through a citizen science process. This approach involves the active participation of individuals with lived experience of depression in the design of the research itself, in redefining our understanding of depression, and in shaping the strategies used to address it. Conducting research of this kind, as explained by Dr. Miquel Domènech, helps to overcome “the divide between expert knowledge and non-expert people”:

“We must move beyond this image of isolated science and ensure that science, technology, and society form a fabric, because even when you go to the doctor and question the medication prescribed to you, they do not understand that you are an involved party.”

The study will be open to the general public, with or without depressive symptoms, who wish to respond to the questionnaire. The final evaluation of the results will be carried out together with people with depression.
