Jordi Coral, Josep Maria Jaumà and Mireia Llinàs at El Cercle del Liceu
On April 18th, Dr Jordi Coral and Dr Josep Maria Jaumà, a former member of our department, gave a joint talk at El Cercle del Liceu on the challenge of translating Shakespeare into Catalan and Spanish. Dr Coral launched the session by discussing the textual instabilities of the Shakespearean corpus and the dramatist’s obsessive passion for some particular words; in the second part, Dr Jaumà offered an account of his experience as translator of Romeo and Juliet into Spanish. The lecture was followed by a lively discussion with the audience that continued over dinner. The event was also attended by Dr Mireia Llinàs, who, as a linguist, contributed much to the debate about the untranslatable nature of Shakespeare’s language.
