Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting

The aim of the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting is to provide training in the principal modes and areas of translation and interpreting, a profession that is present in many spheres and which requires multiple skills within different language combinations.

The basic modes of translation and interpreting are written translation, screen translation, localisation, sight translation, liaison interpreting and consecutive interpreting both in traditional and consolidated areas of professional practice (specialised and editorial translation) and in newer areas in our country (translation and interpreting in hospitals, education centres, courts of law, etc.).

The following learning tracks are offered: Specialised Translation (legal, financial, technical and scientific texts), Editorial Translation, Social and Institutional Interpreting and Translation.

Furthermore, the offer of second languages is not limited to the usual languages (English, French and German) but, uniquely in Spain, also includes Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.

The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the UAB is an international benchmark centre both for its experience and for its facilities. This can be seen clearly in the constant presence of students from all over the world, which makes for a markedly multicultural environment for learning and living. With many of its lecturers also coming from other countries, the Faculty is a crucial force behind the UAB's internationalisation.

Student Profile

The students must have, in language B (English, French or German) a minimum level corresponding to level B1 (for French or German) or B2 (for English) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching and evaluation.

Special entrance exams:

  • Students selecting French or German as language B must accredit their knowledge with a certificate issued by a competent body or, otherwise, attend a tutorial held by FTI professors to determine such knowledge.
  • Students selecting English as language B must pass an entrance exam at the FTI to determine that they have the adequate level.

New students without sufficient knowledge of Spanish or Catalan (foreign students or those from other Spanish autonomous communities where Catalan is not an official language) must take a course in one of these languages in special groups, so as to gain enough command to be able to work out of them.

Career options

The main areas of employment for graduates are:

  • Technical and legal-administrative translation in companies, law firms and international agencies.
  • Interpreting in national or international agencies (UN, UNESCO) or in companies with international relations.
  • Teaching, both in public and private centres.
  • Interpreting at congresses, exhibitions and tourist agencies.
