Management of Smart & Sustainable Cities (UAB-specific undergraduate programme)


The programme's contents will equip students with the knowledge needed to become professionals in information and communication technologies (ICTs), capable of intelligently solving city management issues in which the population, economy, mobility, environment and administration must be taken into account. All this with the final aim of overcoming the challenges posed in current and future management methods. Challenges such as contamination, security, traffic, transport, rubbish collection, utility services, etc. but also sustainable mobility, accessibility, citizen participation, tourism, etc. must find ways to improve their management through the ICTs.

This programme seeks to offer solutions to the new needs posed by growing cities which aim to become authentic spaces in which the quality of life and equal opportunities of its inhabitants is guaranteed. The application of technologies for sustainable city management represents a true revolution in the urban development model, because it improves efficiency in the management of municipal infrastructures and at the same time offer new services which can improve the quality of life of its citizens.

With the aid of different technologies such as geographic information systems, geolocation techniques and satellite navegation, remote sensing, use of sensors and microcontrollers to measure all types of urban activities, communication systems which allow to gather large-volume databases in order to develop new internet applications and services, robotics, artificial intelligence as tools to make more automated decisions, etc. our cities could become more competitive in economic terms and more efficient in environmental terms.

A solid technical foundation and closely related to the fields of engineering and architecture, the added value of these studies can be seen in their social science contents as a basic structure of knowledge on which to build up ICT applications.

The programme is structured into four thematic axes which meet the training needed to understand the functioning, management and governing of a city.
  • Axis 1: Urban, Territorial and Environmental Dynamics
  • Axis 2: Information Processing Systems
  • Axis 3: Mapping, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing
  • Axis 4: Management of Data and Computer Applications

Student Profile

Students interested in taking the course in Management of Smart & Sustainable Cities should have an interest in applying technological developments to the management of urban life and aim to work professionally on companies and public administration focusing on aspects such as logistics, transport, utilities (water, energy, waste), commerce, urban planning and other similar fields.

Students must be able to follow integrated and cross-curricular studies combining technological and social elements, have an open mind, a collaborative spirit and the ability to innovate.
