Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology
The Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology is a response to the accelerating growth of this research area and its important applications in agriculture, health, the environment, biotechnology and engineering. Microorganisms are responsible for the deterioration of food but we also exploit them to produce food, medicine, chemical products, vitamins and enzymes, and to treat waste and purify water. Only 1% of microbial biodiversity has been identified, and its rapid evolution means that new pathogens are appearing that are resistant to antibiotics.
This degree programme aims to respond to the demand for professional microbiologists from the health sector and from various industries, like agro-food, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, the environment and diagnosis. It aims to train up professionals with a broad and up-to-date perspective on microorganisms by integrating current knowledge of their structure, genetics, physiology, metabolism, ecology and diversity so as to understand the role they play in the transformation of our planet, in their relation to other living beings and in the development of our society, and eventually generate new knowledge and microbial applications.
Although in Spain there is no Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, it is offered by several universities abroad, such as those of Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool and Nottingham in the UK, Diderot Paris 7 in France and California (Berkeley) in the USA.
The degree is aimed at students interested in learning about microorganisms and studying their biology and relation with other organisms and how this affects our lives and our planet.
It is also addressed to those who are professionally interested in the fields of basic research or industries of agrofood, pharmaceutics, the environment, diagnostics and health services (human, animal and plant) related both to microbiological production and analysis and to R&D.
It is highly recommendable to have a good level in Biology and to have taken mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in upper secondary school. We also recommend that students should have a good level of English.
A microbiologists is a scientist who studies the biology of microorganisms, how they interact with humans, with other living beings and with the environment, as well as the applications of microorganisms.
Microbiology covers different fields including microbial physiology, environmental microbiology, virology or clinical microbiology.
There are various career options for microbiology professionals such as the ones listed below:
Human Health sector: isolating and identifying pathogen microbes in water, food, etc.
Environmental sector: analysing the microbial diversity of any natural environment, analysing environmental contamination, water quality, etc.
Agrofood sector: studying the beneficial role of microorganisms that are present in the food production process. Participating in the development of new food products, functional foods, etc.
Industrial sector: genetically modifying and improving microorganisms for industrial uses or in the control of industrial fermentations, etc.
