1. What is the schedule for borrowing books?

  • Consult the table of schedules on the Library Services web.

2. Where is the loan service? Where do documents have to be returned to?

  • Each library has specific desks where books are loaned. Go to the library you are interested in and ask.

3. What do I have to do to get a library card? What should I have with me?

  • The loan card is the UAB student, doctor, professor, or administration card - or the UAB community or UAB Friends Association card.
  • If you are a student in the first course, student from a centre in association with the UAB or Erasmus students and not yet have a student's card, go to the loan desk, where we will make a provisional library card. Bring your ID card or passport and the university registration.

4. How many documents can I borrow? And for how many days?

  • The lenght of the loan depends on the type of document and type of user. Many libraries also have a weekend loan service.

    The maximun lenght of loans depending on the type of user is listed below:

  • Degree students may have up to 8 documents for a maximum of 14 days.
  • Third cycle students may have up to 16 documents for a maximum of 28 days.
  • Professors may have up to 35 books over the academic year; they must, however, be returned or renewed before the 15th of June, or immediately if they are requested by another user (as long as 30 days have elapsed since the time they were borrowed, as they can be reserved by other users).
  • The Personnel of Administration and Services ( PAS ) may borrow up to 8 documents for 28 days.
  • The members of UAB Friends Association may have up to 4 documents for a maximum of 14 days.

5. Can I borrow journals and newspapers?

  • No, they are exempt from being borrowed

6. How and how many times can I renew the loan of a document?

  • The document must be renewed before the return date expires, as long as it has not been requested to be reserved by another user and your card is not blocked. Documents can be renewed 6 times by:
    • Doing so personally at any library
    • By telephone. Look them at the last page of the Loan Guide
    • By the Internet from "My account / El meu compte" which can be accessed from the home page

7. Can I renew the loan of documents from other libraries?

  • Yes, as long as it is one of the UAB's libraries.

8. Can I renew a document several times?

  • Yes, but no more than 6 times.
  • If you have already renewed a document 6 times and it is not reserved, you can ask to borrow it again by going to the loan desk with the document.

9. What do I have to do to reserve a document?

  • You can reserve any document, no matter if it is on loan or available
  • The option Reserve is on the left side of the list of results or on the top of the page. When you click on the Reserve button you will have to fill the form with your NIU and password and then you could choose  whichever item and the library where you will pick it up.
  • Reserves than you don't need, please made a cancellation through My account

10. How many days can I keep the reserve?

  • Reserved documents are kept at the Library Loan Desk for three days.  When the document is returned to the library you will receive a message in your UAB e-mail account telling you the latest date on which you can collect the document and the library you should go to.

11. Can I reserve documents from other libraries?

  • Yes, The option Reserve is on the left side of the list of results or on the top of the page. When you click on the Reserve button you will have to fill the form with your NIU and password and then you could choose  whichever item and the library where you will pick it up.

12. Can I reserve a document with the card blocked?

  • From the catalogue, section "My account / El meu compte" it is not possible. Please, go to your library loan desk an ask more information.

13. How can I know which documents I have borrowed, when I have to return them, if the documents I have reserved have arrived, etc?

  • From any computer with access to the Internet, look in the section "My account / El meu compte" this can be accessed from home page.
  • You must type in your user code (NIU) and your password.

14. What happens if I return a document late?

  • The right to borrow documents is cancelled for the same period as the number of days the document is overdue, except in weekend documents which is four days per day of late return. This rule applies to all overdue documents, not counting holidays and weekends.

15. I've lost my UAB student card, what do I have to do?

  • See incidents for student cards
  • We will make you a provisional card that will be good until you have your new card. Return the provisional card to the loan desk when you have your new card.

16. I've lost a document I've borrowed, what do I do?

  • Article 27.2 of the Library Services Regulations on user responsibilities states:
    Each user of the loan service is responsible for works as long as they are in his or her possession. In the event of the partial or total destruction, loss or non-return of the loaned work, substitution must be made of another copy of the same edition and of the same characteristics, or payment must be made for double the market value of the work, without prejudice to other responsabilities that may be incurred, in accordance with current legislation. 

17. This document is on loan, who has it? How many documents has user X borrowed?

  • Personal data and loan information is confidential and we do not provide them to anyone.

18. How is that there are books loaned until 15/06/****?

  • These are books that professors have borrowed. If you need one of these books, you can ask to borrow the book if 30 days have elapsed since the book was borrowed. The professor will be notified that the book must be returned so you may consult or borrow it.

19. Can I take a book out on loan using a card that isn't mine?

  • No, the cards are personal and non-transferable, unless you bring an authorization signed with the DNI number of the another user. Print and fill the form to authorize another person to use your card.

20. Can I request an inter-library loan of a book or journal?

  • Yes: to do so, speak with the UAB Inter-Library Loan Section. Consult the procedure for this service and the current fees
  • Use the form for requesting material not found in the UAB's libraries.

21. Has the book or journal article I requested on inter-library loan arrived yet?

  • UAB Inter-Library Loan Section send you a message at your e-mail account when the book arrive and also inform you the place to pick up it.
  • Students must speak with the UAB Inter-Library Loan Section, Building N (Plaça Cívica); telephone 93 581 10 50; fax 93 581 32 19.
  • Professors with authorisation for this type of expenses can receive at the department the photocopies of journal articles requested or pick them up at the UAB Inter-Library Loan Section. If it is a book, you must pick it up either at the site where it was requested (at a certain library or the UAB Inter-Library Loan Section).
  • This service follows the established procedure and payment will be made in accordance with current fees.
