The UAB Columns

Since 1999, the UAB campus contains an emblematic work of art that already has become one of the University's symbols of identity. Created by the Valencian sculptor Andreu Alfaro, this work of art consists of four twisting columns built from red granite that stretch up to the sky.

The columns, measuring between 25 and 40 metres tall, are located on a grassy field and covered by large blocks of stone containing the inscriptions of all the universities belonging to the Joan Lluís Vives Institute.

This gateway to the UAB marks a symbol that looks towards the future but at the same time maintains the solid foundations it represents, such as the unity of Catalonia's university community and the inseperable links between nature, science, art and identity.

"Wherever there is a stone, it will continue to be there after a thousand years and many generations will be able to see it", said Andreu Alfaro at the unveiling of the UAB Columns on 10 September 1999. This monumental sculpture was unveiled by the then president of the Catalan Government, Jordi Pujol, who praised the simplicity of Alfaro's work by saying "this is the way in which great artists work". Together with the then UAB Rector, Carles Solà, and the university community, members from academic, cultural and political spheres were also present on that 10 September to share the moment in which the UAB witnessed a new change in its structure.
