The mental health of healthcare professionals (doctors, vets, nurses, psychologists) and other professionals with significant social responsibility (civil protection and emergency services personnel, firefighters, police officers, prison officers, social workers and educators, and teachers) is a matter of growing concern worldwide. These professionals face highly stressful working conditions, including long working hours, demanding training requirements, a high level of responsibility and continuous exposure to emotionally complex and challenging situations. These circumstances have been identified as occupational risk factors, which can sometimes lead to emotional exhaustion, burnout and the development of severe mental health conditions and/or addictions, amongst other psychological difficulties.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these problems, making it clear that there is an urgent need to address the mental health of these professionals in a systemic manner. That is why the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine at the UAB Faculty of Medicine, the Galatea Foundation, Mutual Médica and the Barcelona Medical Association are promoting the micro-credential in The Self-care of the Professional and Care of the Teams. The Transcendence of Leadership.
The programme integrates contributions from psychology, neuroscience and the somatic perspective to understand the processes involved in emotional regulation and provide practical self-care tools. It also addresses team healing from a systemic perspective, analysing the impact of organisational models and leadership styles on collective mental health.
The training focuses on the design of personalised self-care plans, crisis intervention strategies and organisational change initiatives aimed at creating healthy and sustainable professional environments.
An initiative under the Galatea Mutual Médica Chair.
