Hearing is one of the most complex sensory functions and is essential for communication, learning and interaction with the environment. The ability to perceive, localise and interpret sounds depends on the integration of sophisticated biomechanical, neurophysiological and cognitive mechanisms that transform sound waves into meaningful information for the brain. Scientific and technological advances in recent decades have revolutionised our understanding of these processes and driven the development of new diagnostic tools, hearing aids and rehabilitation strategies that are increasingly precise and personalised.

The Expert Diploma in Hearing Technologies and Audiology has been designed to meet the growing need for specialised training in a constantly evolving field, where the sciences of hearing, health, biomedical engineering, signal processing and artificial intelligence converge. The programme offers comprehensive training that combines the biological and physiological fundamentals of hearing with the most advanced knowledge in hearing technologies, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation and data analysis applied to hearing health.

The training programme is structured around a number of specialised micro-credentials that enable participants to explore key areas in depth, such as cochlear micromechanics, psychoacoustics, advanced signal processing in hearing loss treatment devices, the pathophysiology of the ear and hearing diagnostic devices, vestibular rehabilitation, and the applications of artificial intelligence and big data in audiology. This modular structure facilitates both specific professional development and the acquisition of a comprehensive, integrated overview of the field.

The programme combines a solid theoretical foundation with a strongly applied focus, providing the necessary skills to understand and utilise the most advanced technologies currently employed in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of hearingand vestibular disorders. Furthermore, it enables students to interpret physiological and electrophysiological measurements, understand the operating principles of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and incorporate data analysis tools and personalised medicine into professional practice.

The programme is complemented by a module on advanced practical training carried out in specialised settings, where students will work with the equipment and methodologies used in research and clinical care. Practical activities will take place at the Santo Pablo Research Institute, the Hearing Lab and the Acoustic Lab – state-of-the-art laboratories that facilitate experimental learning in areas such as cochlear micromechanics, psychoacoustics, signal processing, otoacoustic emissions, auditory evoked potentials, steady-state auditory responses and vestibular assessment.

Aimed at audiologists, hearing aid specialists, health sciences professionals, biomedical engineers, researchers and other specialists working in the field of hearing, this Expert Diploma offers a unique opportunity to update knowledge, develop new skills and gain an advanced understanding of the technologies that are transforming hearing health.

In short, the programme provides innovative, multidisciplinary training focused on the present and future challenges of audiology, helping to train professionals capable of incorporating the latest scientific and technological advances into clinical practice, research and the development of new solutions in the field of hearing and balance.

Career opportunities

The Expert Diploma in Hearing Technologies and Audiology equips professionals to carry out activities relating to the assessment, diagnosis and fitting of hearing technologies, auditory and vestibular rehabilitation, as well as the application of new digital tools in the field of hearing. The main career opportunities are:

- Specialist in clinical audiology, participating in the assessment and diagnosis of hearing and vestibular function in public and private healthcare centres.
- Prosthetic audiologist or specialist audiology technician, with advanced knowledge of the fitting, verification and monitoring of hearing aids and cochlear implants.
- Support staff in cochlear implant and hearing implant units, assisting with the selection of candidates, programming and monitoring of devices.
- Specialist in vestibular diagnosis and rehabilitation, involved in the assessment and treatment of balance disorders.
- Consultant or adviser on hearing technologies, working for companies in the audiology sector, manufacturers of hearing aids, implants and diagnostic equipment.
- Research and innovation professional in audiology, collaborating on projects involving the development of medical devices, signal processing, artificial intelligence and data analysis applied to hearing health.
- Specialist in data analysis and digital technologies in audiology, involved in projects relating to personalised medicine, big data and clinical decision support systems.
- Teaching and training support professional in technical training and professional development programmes in the field of hearing technologies.

This qualification also provides a solid foundation for progression to postgraduate studies, master’s degrees or research programmes related to audiology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience and health technologies.

Internships

UAB masters and graduate diplomas may include or facilitate external academic internships in companies or institutions in order to help the student to achieve a level of expertise that facilitates the insertion or promotion in the workplace.

For this study programme non-curricular (optional) internships are possible:

  • Non-curricular
As a UAB student, you have access to the University occupation portal, the Occupability Service, through which you can participate in selection processes for non-curricular practices as well as getting a contract. In both cases, you need to sign up to the Nexus application.
