University master's degree in Erasmus Mundus in German and French Philosophy: Contemporary Issues (PhiAFEC)

International study program where the student will learn knowledge in modern German philosophy, French and German phenomenology and contemporary French thinking

  • Erasmus Mundus
The Department of Philosophy of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona is the only centre in Spain to include a European academic programme in philosophy, established in 2007 as the Europhilosophie platform, with the involvement of the consortium of the official master's degree Erasmus Mundus in German and French Philosophies: Contemporary Issues (PhiAFEC).

The focus of studies of the PhiAFEC is put on modern German philosophy, French and German phenomenology and contemporary French thought. Thus, the proposal takes on the transformations which have given way to the current philosophical panorama in Europe and beyond, and explains the exchanges produced by the interactions between different philosophical trends since the 16th century which shaped the history of the humanities and social sciences into sciences of matter and life.

This academic proposal constitutes a critical introduction into the totality of knowledge produced since then up until modern days, with attention put on the central debates which have found their translation into related fields such as anthropology, sociology, linguistics, psychopathologies, physics, biology and the plastic, performing and visual arts; as well as the transformations this diversity of knowledge has represented around the world and which have made its comprehension possible.

At the same time, it intends to foster a specific theoretical reflection related to the emancipatory practices which have given way to the production of knowledge within the contexts of political philosophy, artistic research, drama and art proposals, feminisms and the gender theory, subaltern and decolonial studies which provide marked independence when analysing today's reality.

The plural approach of the training offered by the  PhiAFEC allows you to choose from a diversity of specialisations based on a profound knowledge of the entire corpus of modern and contemporary philosophy, with the aim of looking beyond the hegemonic colonial European context in order to question it. The “worldliness” of the philosophy found at the core of the master's degree is the point which marks the standards of the philosophical exercises and gives meaning to the Erasmus Mundus. The course brings together French and German philosophies to examine them through a critical and self-reflecting exchange with non-European philosophies born out of the decolonisation processes of Latin America, Africa and Asia.

In this sense, the PhiAFEC offers a model of epistemic, linguistic and political diversity. In addition to the demands of a simple cultural exchange, it requires students and lecturers to invent new forms of plural thought and implement a truly scientific and intellectual diplomacy with the aim, in recognition of differences, to analyse urgent issues that are common to the women and men of the 21st century and which are not exclusively of a humanistic nature.

The PhiAFEC study plan is divided into semester itineraries at each of the consortium universities. Lectures are offered in French and German, with additional language classes being offered at the Goethe-Institut Toulouse. During the summer months, the Erasmus Mundus also includes mobility programmes to other participating universities: Moscow, Seoul, Bahia and Jamaica.
