The course "Introduction to Pali Language and Literature: Advanced Syntax and Commentarial Literature" expands upon the themes and content of the previous beginner and intermediate‑level courses offered at the UAB. Although it represents an academic continuation, this new course is independent in terms of enrollment. It is not mandatory to have completed the previous module to register, but prior knowledge of Pali is recommended in order to follow the course properly.
Students will focus on advanced concepts of nominal syntax, with particular emphasis on case syntax, and will also cover a section dedicated to the syntax of verbal tenses. Alongside morphology, the course will introduce the different conjugations and the derivation of roots in personal and impersonal verbs. In terms of reading practice, students will be introduced to the scholastic style of the commentaries, distinguishing it from canonical Pali.
Synchronous teaching on Fridays from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm (Barcelona, Spain time).
