The Specialisation Course in Developmental Neonatal and Family-Centered Care: The High-Risk Premature Newborn, offered by EUI Sant Pau, is aimed at nurses wishing to gain a deeper understanding of an evidence-based model of neonatal care, designed to promote the neurological development of the very preterm infant and to place the family at the heart of the care process.
This approach recognises the vulnerability of the very preterm and sick baby, as well as that of the environment, early experiences and the familys active involvement in short- and long-term health outcomes. The course aligns with international recommendations for neonatal care and addresses the need for specific training in this field.
The practical placements will enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real clinical setting, participating in care centred on neonatal development and the family under the supervision of expert professionals.

Practical training in care focused on neonatal development and the family: The high-risk preterm baby:
- Clinical practice
Providing care in hospital units treating very preterm babies and/or those with neonatal conditions, applying the evidence-based Development- and Family-Centred Care model.
Nurse in delivery rooms
Immediate care at birth and care of the newborn during the neonatal transition period, incorporating humanising practices, promotion of early bonding and prevention of neonatal stress.
Participation in follow-up and support programmes for families of preterm babies within the hospital care setting
Involvement in structured programmes for discharge preparation, therapeutic education and the transition home from neonatal inpatient units. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and specialist services (Paediatrics, Neuropaediatrics, early intervention) to monitor the babys neurodevelopment, provide ongoing family counselling and support the transition to the home environment.
