Many historical collections include, alongside archival documents, old books and early printed materials; elements that are inseparable from the collection and its creator, although they require a specific type of analysis and treatment that differs from that applied to documentary records. Consequently, specialised training in codicology and book history is necessary to manage this part of historical collections.
This course offers, through a practical and methodological approach, the theoretical and practical knowledge required to identify and describe all the elements (that is, the external characteristics and compositional techniques) that make up medieval manuscripts and early printed books produced in the Catalan sphere during the early modern period. The aim is to facilitate their identification, dating, description and cataloguing, thereby contributing to their preservation and dissemination.
The training is organised into two distinct parts: the first focuses on the identification and study of the Catalan medieval codex through codicological analysis and the history of manuscript books; the second is dedicated to documents printed with hand‑press technology up to 1820. In this second part, students will receive theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as useful resources, to understand the publication process, the structure of printed books, and the identification of commonly occurring elements. The goal is to identify and describe the main book types of this period and to provide tools for understanding the cataloguing of printed materials according to metadata standards used in library catalogues, though without providing full qualifications to perform complete cataloguing.
