Webinar: The vulnerability of the consumer and/or digital user. The protection of rights between innovation, abuse, and fraud - Law Alumni Network of the UAB.
Description:
We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, at the session of the UAB Law Alumni Network on «The vulnerability of the consumer and/or digital user. The protection of rights between innovation, abuse, and fraud».
It will be led by Mónica Perna Hernández, Lecturer in the Commercial and Private Law Unit. It will take place at 6:30 PM in an online format.
The talk will address how a person's digital legacy represents a value that is often overlooked. The lack of regulation and security in the virtual space exposes the consumer or digital user to serious economic risks. In today's digitalized society, a person's digital assets—comprised of data, profiles, content, and virtual holdings—represent a highly relevant value, although it is often ignored or underestimated. This intangible part, which accompanies the individual throughout their digital life, becomes especially vulnerable in the absence of specific regulation or, more commonly, due to a lack of awareness by consumers/users about the complexity of the virtual space.
In this context, consumers and digital users are exposed to significant economic risks, arising both from abusive practices and from the insufficiency of legal protection mechanisms. Therefore, a critical reflection is necessary on the limits of current law and the need to adapt it to new digital realities in order to ensure effective protection of consumers’/users’ rights.
The webinar will be moderated by Dr. Santiago Robert Guillén, professor and coordinator of the UAB Law Alumni Network.
