The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities Funds Several Research Projects in the Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences at the UAB currently hosts several research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Knowledge Generation Projects), in which its members participate either as principal investigators or as researchers. Professors Santiago Tejedor, Cristina Pulido, Núria Simelio, Ricardo Carniel and Anna Tous are leading research projects, while Professors Santiago Giraldo, Luiz Peres, Laura Cervi and Beatriz Villarejo are members of research teams.

Artificial Intelligence for the Promotion of Quality Journalism and Media Literacy

PI: Santiago Tejedor

This project examines the potential of artificial intelligence to promote quality journalism that fosters media literacy and contributes to the improvement of the media ecosystem through transformations in the production process. It proposes an analysis of applied technological advances introduced by AI, as well as a study of its main challenges.

SafeNarratives: Preventive Narratives Based on Scientific Evidence for the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence

PI: Cristina Pulido

Gender-based violence remains an urgent societal issue. SafeNarratives addresses a critical concern within the Spanish media landscape: the lack of scientifically grounded preventive evidence with social impact in journalistic narratives focused on gender and the prevention of gender-based violence.

Digital Media and Social Networks. Discourses on Female Moroccan Migration in the Mediterranean: Construction of Imaginaries, Uses and Reception

Co-PI: Núria Simelio and Ricardo Carniel

This project analyses how discourses in digital press and social media, both Moroccan and Spanish, influence the construction of imaginaries that generate stereotypes and situations of vulnerability. It also addresses the perceptions of migrant women, who combine digital media with family and community networks to access information and express themselves.

Social Polarisation and Interculturality: Political News Consumption among Migrant and Non-Migrant Youth from an Intersectional Perspective

The POINTAP project examines how young people aged 19 to 34, both migrants and non-migrants, respond to social polarisation through political news consumption related to migration and asylum, the labour market, and LGBTI inclusion. The project is led by Amparo Huertas-Bailén, with the participation of Luiz Peres-Neto, among others.

Criminal Law in the Face of Disinformation in the Digital Environment

The DIGICRIM project analyses how the legal system can respond to the risks posed by fake news and disinformation discourses on social media. Its aim is to examine whether existing criminal offences or new legal instruments can better protect national security by integrating perspectives from criminal law and communication studies. The project is led by Joan Baucells (UAB – Law), with the participation of Santiago Giraldo and Luiz Peres, among others.

Sport Is Politics: A Study of Gender, Ethnicity and Health Representation in Sports-Themed Audiovisual Content

PI: Anna Tous Rovirosa

This project explores national and international sports audiovisual productions as drivers of social values and healthy practices, while also analysing gender inequality. It addresses social challenges related to audiovisual consumption, health, risk behaviours and physical activity.
