Public speaking: communicate with impact

Does public speaking make you nervous? Learn to turn nerves into confidence and to argue your ideas with conviction.

Hands-on course in oral communication built around experiential exercises and both improvised and prepared interventions, simulating the real communicative situations anyone can face when speaking at a conference. You will work on structuring a speech, non-verbal and paraverbal communication, argumentation, and handling improvisation. In-person format, including an individual coaching session delivered remotely for each participant, recognized with 1 ECTS credit.

Course details

• WHEN: Tuesdays April 20, April 27, May 4 and May 11, 2027 (4 sessions)
• TIME: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• WHERE: Emprèn UAB Space (above the Plaça Cívica bar), plus an individual remote coaching session during the course
• WHO IT'S FOR: the whole university community, with priority given to students aged 18 to 24

Program

• Session 1 (April 20): Self-awareness and speech structure. Analysis of each participant's strengths and weaknesses, types of speakers and audiences, and a first approach to structuring a speech.
• Session 2 (April 27): Non-verbal communication and argumentation. Personal image, body posture and gestures, and the topoi as a basis for argumentation. Preparing an elevator pitch and an individual coaching session.
• Session 3 (May 4): Framing and paraverbal communication. The OREO technique for structuring messages, and voice work: intensity, tone, pace and intonation. Preparing a TED talk and an individual coaching session.
• Session 4 (May 11): Debate and improvisation. Chained debate, prepared improvisation, recitation and mirroring. Individual coaching session and closing with the prepared TED talk.

Led by

Josep Vicenç Mestre Nogué, PhD in History and Public Speaking from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and director of Estratègia, Comunicació i Oratòria (ECO SL). He is an associate professor at UPF and has taught oral communication at eight other universities. He combines this academic work with training for executives at private companies and his experience as an institutional communication advisor.

Recognition

Undergraduate students who complete the course can request 1 ECTS credit (13 in-person hours + 12 hours of preparation) to be added to their academic record.
