Welcome Session and Inaugural Lecture
We would like to invite you to the inaugural session of our doctoral program, which will take place on November 5, from 10:00 to 13:30, in the Sala de Graus, located at the Faculty entrance.
The session will convey information about the program’s academic year and procedures, presentation of first-year doctoral students, queries and comments.
It also includes the Inaugural Lecture with Joseph Sung-Yul Park, entitled Language as Doing: What the Artificial Intelligence Boom Tells Us About the Nature of Language
Professor Joseph Sung-Yul Park, from the Department of English, Linguistics, and Theatre Studies at the National University of Singapore, is a linguist specializing in discourse, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. After receiving his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he taught at Northern Arizona University and the University of Macau. He has published extensively on language ideology and identity, English as a global language, language and transnationalism, neoliberalism, English in South Korea, and language in the media. Among his most significant books are In Pursuit of English: Language and Subjectivity in Neoliberal South Korea (Oxford University Press) and Markets of English: Linguistic Capital and Language Policy in a Globalizing World (Routledge).
