The first edition of the Film and Video in Language Teaching course was given by award-winning writer Kieran Donaghy at UAB Languages Barcelona in July. The course was attended by teachers and researchers from Algeria, Scotland, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Catalonia. The participants learnt how to write activities for authentic film and video, how to use film and video to help students learn vocabulary, foster oral, written communicative competence, and oral comprehension, how to create digital films for the language classroom, and how short films can be used to foster creativity, empathy and visual literacy.

The feedback from the teachers was excellent. Here are some of their comments:

“I loved the way Kieran delivered the course and how much he knows about the field.”

"I loved the tutor's energy, enthusiasm, the topic's relevance and the hands-on instructions given."

“Kieran always exemplified the theory with practical examples, teaching ideas and activities.”

“Kieran delivered the course in a very enthusiastic atmosphere.”

“The training course helped me to a great extent as many aspects have become clearer now with regards to film use. It also helped me to develop many more points in my research project as recommendations to English language teachers, to me as a teacher as well, and hopefully, to organise some workshops for teachers in Algeria and share with them what I learnt from this training and how to apply films and videos in their classes effectively.”

There are still places available for next editions of the course from 17th to 21st July and 18th to 22nd September 2017.
