Applied Statistics

The Bachelor's Degree in Applied Statistics provides training in statistics with a large component of analysis, communication and objectivity. Students will become experts in the use of quantitative tools for experimental research and scientific data analysis.

Unlike other degrees, this one adopts an applied approach oriented towards multidisciplinary teams, thus responding to professional needs in the field of Statistics. The Degree in Applied Statistics offers various specialisation tracks: Bioinformatics (UVic), Financial Economics (UAB), Demography (UAB), Statistics Applied to Health Sciences (UAB), and Industry and Technology (UVic). This diversity can be attributed to the fact that the degree is taught jointly with the University of Vic (UVic).

One of the most characteristic traits of today's society is the large amount of information generated by different types of media. The continuous development of new information and communication technologies (ICT) has accelerated this process notably and makes it easier to disseminate large amounts of data throughout the world.

Experts in statistics are essential in projects carried out by multidisciplinary teams where there is a need to work in collaboration with specialists from other fields and participate in decision making processes such as experimental designs or the extraction of models and trends for the interpretation of results.

All subjects of the three first years of the degree are taught at the UAB. Some are taught by teaching staff from the UVic, but always in UAB classrooms. In the fourth year students may choose to take all courses at the UAB or take one or more at the UVic, depending on the track they wish to follow.

 

Student Profile

The recommended profile for access to the Degree in Applied Statistics is that of a student interested in information analysis techniques and their applications for decision-making in a wide range of fields of knowledge, such as life and health sciences, engineering, economics, sociology and experimental sciences.

Among the desirable qualities for future students are analytical capacity, interest in logical reasoning and computing, skills in calculus and the ability to work in teams.
It is advisable to have taken the subjects Mathematics or Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences in upper secondary education.

Career options

Gaining competitive advantage through the use of data is what defines the profession of data scientist. It is a new and emerging profession and currently boasts one of the highest employment rates. The reason for this is simple: a data scientist plays a versatile role, given that data processing is essential in practically all economic sectors, and can throw light on any type of social phenomenon. Data scientists should have training in statistics and/or should work in multidisciplinary teams with statisticians, though possibly also with economists, information technologists, mathematicians, etc.
Some examples of specific fields in which companies and institutions actively use statistics are:
- Economics and finance: data analysis and granting of credits, research on surveys and opinion polls, marketing and sales departments, analysis of competitors, consultancy and identification of market niches.
- Industries and services: experiment design, quality control, improvement of processes and products, logistics and optimisation of distribution processes, geolocation of phenomena and people, retail trade and e-commerce (buying recommendations, direct marketing, etc.).
- Life sciences, health sciences, biohealth and psychology:: health, medicine, public health, hospital management and health care, pharmaceutical industry, animal health, clinical trials, the environment, biology, agriculture, marine sciences.
- Public administrations: official statistics institutes, centres studying social trends and public opinion, demographic projections, exploitation of cadastral information, local administration (smart cities, citizen collaboration and relations), assessment of public policies, etc.
- Teaching and research: : secondary school teaching, university teaching and research, continuous professional development and basic research.
- Media and social networks: print, radio, television, cinema, investigative journalism and data journalism. Web analytics (views, visits, time on the page, new visits, pages per visit, etc.) should also be included here.

Evaluation

ECTS methodology incorporates the continuous assessment of all academic work done by students: classwork, practicals and oral and written presentations. In some subjects there are global tests, during the course and/or at the end.
