Presentation

Of all sciences, chemistry occupies a central position in response to the progress of society. It is both a branch of science and an industry sector. As a science, the objective of this discipline is to research and study the properties and transformations occurring in matter; while in the industrial sector of high technology products it aims to make optimal use of non-natural matters and products. Given that everything which can be touched, seen, smelled, or feel is matter, there are not limits to this discipline. 

The Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry at the UAB is characterised by a high level of experimentation already in students' first year. A total of 50% of the credits are made up of practical classes. The degree also offers three minors in the areas which have evolved most in recent years: Materials Chemistry, Biological Chemistry and Industrial and Environmental Chemistry, all of which boost even further the professional perspectives of graduates. In addition, the UAB offers its students an innovative option by providing a joint degree in Physics and Chemistry, so that those interested can study both degrees simultaneously.  

Not only does the degree in Chemistry guarantee excellence in academic training, the UAB Department of Chemistry has also received international recognition for its quality in research. It is comprised of a large number of internationally known research groups, something that gives students a chance to have continuous contact with the latest developments in chemistry. Moreover, many services are offered and laboratories made available such as the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Service (SeRMN), the X-Ray Diffraction Services, the Chemical Analysis Services and the Controlled Environment Laboratory (Cleanroom). 

Having the ALBA-CELLS facility, one of the most unique scientific facilities in Spain, in the vicinity of the UAB also contributes to first level international research in the field of chemistry. It was precisely the researchers from the Department of Chemistry of the UAB and the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) who were the first to use the ALBA Synchrotron. The scientists studied the magnetic properties of nanoparticles found in superconductor materials with the aim of improving these properties, a research which sought to find a substantial improvement in the efficacy of the electrical distribution network.

Student Profile

The ideal student for this degree should have the following qualities: 

  • Curiosity, observational and deductive skills:
  • Ability to reason through logic and rigorous analysis.
  • Abstract thinking ability
  • Interest in research and experimentation.
  • Order, rigour and method in work.

We recommend that students should have a good level in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and also a knowledge of English.

Career options

Multiple options in the chemicals industry, both in production and in sales, and in different levels of Public Administration. Also in the education sector.
Chemistry graduates are welcomed on around fifteen research master's programmes in the UAB area and in its public research centres.

Evaluation

ECTS methodology consists of continued assessment of all academic work done by students.
