Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology
The Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology aims to provide interdisciplinary training that integrates knowledge of the functions and potential of living beings, experimental work methods, the latest applications and production processes. This training is complemented with knowledge of the areas of bioinformatics, bioethics, legislation, economics and management and the improvement of linguistic competence in English, especially in relation to the use of specific terminology.
Biotechnology is the application of science and technology to living beings and their cellular or molecular behaviour in order to advance knowledge of the same and produce goods or services. Biotechnology is an integrated discipline from which man has benefited from for centuries before it received this name, but the most important advances have occurred over the recent period, inspired by the development of new methodologies. This is a field in major expansion that has diversified towards a wide variety of areas, such as medicine and health, agro-food production, industrial production and the field of energy and the environment.
The training offered in the Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology concords with the subjects offered in European and American universities internationally known for their excellence in the field of life sciences. This makes international mobility for our students easier. Proof of UAB's excellent training can be seen in the large number of businesses, health institutes and research centres in which our students carry out their work placements in the last year of their studies.
The UAB was one of the first universities to implement a degree in Biotechnology in Spain. The degree is offered at the Faculty of Biosciences, the only one to exist in the state. The faculty is the first in the country to offer a powerful range of studies in life sciences: Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Biomedical Sciences.
Biotechnology, moreover, played a strategic role in the creation of the UAB Biocluster which integrates knowledge generated by the university, the exploitation of research results and the transfer to society of information in the fields of biomedicine, bioscience and biodiversity.
Those wishing to take this course must have a balanced scientific profile, with the capacity for experimental design, an applied vision of science and technology and an integrated predisposition of all of these aspects for the design of processes on an industrial scale. They must also be hard-working and open-minded, aware that they are entering a field that is constantly evolving and growing.
It is highly recommendable to have a good level in Biology and to have taken mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in upper secondary school. We also recommend that students should have a good level of English.
Career optionsBiotechnological processes are used in a wide range of sectors, including pharmaceutics and healthcare, food, the environment and fuels, all of which are well-established in the area around the university.
The degree in Biotechnology provides multidisciplinary training that offers employment prospects in the areas of research, development, production and management and data protection, both in private and in public institutions.
Graduates in Biotechnology are equipped to work in R&D departments in a large variety of biotechnological firms related to sectors such as pharmaceutics, veterinary drugs, fine chemicals, agro-food products or microelectronics and in their production lines. They will also be able to design strategies for the marketing and commercialisation of biotechnological products, and also to work professionally in areas of technology management or transfer.
In research or health institutions they can work in hospitals, analysis laboratories and in basic and applied animal and human health centres, with derivations towards similar fields such as veterinary science, the environment or microelectronics.
EvaluationECTS methodology consists of continued assessment of all academic work done by students.
