Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering

The Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering provides a very extensive overview of this subject, including traditional areas (mechanics, materials, thermal energy, industrial electricity and electronics, etc.), and emerging ones like renewable energy systems, home automation and energy efficiency.

Taught at the Salesian School of Sarrià, affiliated to the UAB, the degree programme in Electrical Engineering aims to equip its students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the generation, distribution, control, protection and adaptation of electrical energy to industrial and domestic activity. Graduates in this subject will also deal with emerging fields like electrical traction and alternative energies and generation of electrical energy in wind power and photovoltaic systems, which have expanded considerably in recent years and are expected to continue to do so in the future. Students receive personalised monitoring of their progress on the course and are taught by lecturers who have connections to the industry itself.

The course includes a large amount of laboratory practice using cutting-edge teaching equipment and various design and simulation programmes. There are also agreements in place for students to be trained at prestigious companies. In the Engineering By Doing version students spend a long period with the company, working on a previously agreed training project, which consolidates their existing competences and equips them with new ones.

As for career options, the number of unemployed graduates in this degree is practically zero, with an average period of three months before finding work.

Student Profile

The ideal student for this degree should have the following qualities:

  • Interest in mathematics and physics
  • IT knowledge.
  • Calculation skills.
  • Practical, organised and methodical
  • Analysis and synthesis skills.
  • Spatial vision and attention to detail
  • Good manual skills
  • Interest in research
  • Good level of English
It is recommended to have a good level in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Career options

The electricity sector requires graduates for the large companies that generate, transport and distribute electric energy. There is also considerable demand for electrical engineers to work on the design and construction of electrical systems and installations and their maintenance, together with systems for protection and manoeuvre in all types of installations, illumination, design and development of devices and applications, management of contracts and purchasing, etc.
The most common areas for graduates to work in are:

  • Planning and management of the generation, transport and distribution of electricity.
  • Management of projects for electrical installations.
  • Design and control of electrical machines and electrical functions.
  • Design, production and inspection of electrical material and cables.
  • Management of lighting projects.
  • Surveys, certifications and inspections of electrical installations.
  • Design and installation of air conditioning systems.
