Centre for Demographic Studies (CED)
DescriptionThe Centre for Demographic Studies (Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics, CED) was created in 1984 as a joint venture between the Government of Catalonia and the UAB. According to 2011 data, the centre has over 80 members, including researchers, technicians, administrative personnel, postgraduate students and visiting researchers.
CED is member of the Population Europe: The European Population Partnership, the most prestigious network on the continent bringing together centres specialising in demography. Competitive projects are carried out with funding from European, national and regional organisations, as well as publicly - and sometimes privately - funded projects.
The CED, in collaboration with the UAB, offers two postgraduate programmes: the Master in Regional and Population-Demography Studies (since 2007) and the Doctoral Degree in Demography (since 1994). It is member of the European Doctoral Network Demo-Doc, a multinational programme for doctoral degrees in demography. In the 2011-2013 academic years it will be the headquarters of the European Doctoral School of Demography.
Links to the UABCED maintains close ties with the UAB Department of Geography since it was founded in 1984. In January 2009 an agreement was signed to formalise the main lines of action of this collaboration; an agreement which has led to the development of university studies in population and demography with a level of excellence prized by several evaluating committees.
Anna Cabré, director of CED, and five more lecturers of the Department of Geography conduct part of their research at the centre. Moreover, since its constitution, a representative of the department is member of the centre's Governing Council and a large number of the centre's researchers are adjunct lecturers or give classes in demography at both undergraduate and postgraduate level: in the doctoral degree since 1999, in the master's degree since 2005.
