Joan Oró was a prolific and brilliant Catalan researcher (Lleida, 1923 - Barcelona, 2004). He graduated in Chemical Sciences from the University of Barcelona and emigrated to the United States, where he earned a PhD in Biochemistry and later became a professor at the University of Houston. Dr. Oró focused his studies on understanding the origin of life on our planet, and from 1963 he collaborated on several NASA space research projects, such as the Apollo project for the analysis of rocks and other samples of lunar material, and the Viking program. In 1971, he helped launch one of the research centers of the UAB, the former Institute of Fundamental Biology (IBF), which is now the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB) of the UAB.

Dr. Claudio Cuchillo, professor emeritus of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UAB and collaborator in the Joan Oró stage at the ICF, and Dr Emili Gelpí, professor of research at the CSIC, at the Institute for Biomedical Research in Barcelona, and first Catalan disciple of Dr. Joan Oró at the University of Houston, offered us two splendid talks on the history of science and the history of the UAB, which enabled us to reflect on the difficulties and joys of research. A great homage to Dr. Oró.

We wish you a good 2023-24 course!
