Victoria Reyes-García receives the Women in Science Award from Muy Interesante magazine
Victoria Reyes-García, anthropologist and researcher at ICTA-UAB, has been recognized by the magazine Muy Interesante with the Women in Science Award in the Anthropology category.
This award, now in its third edition, recognizes and promotes the work of researchers who dedicate part of their efforts to the dissemination and diffusion of science, in order to improve the scientific culture in society.
Muy Interesante will present the Women in Science Award at a ceremony to be held during Science Fest on 18 November in Madrid, where all the winners will be honored for "their talent and innovation in the world of science".
Victoria Reyes-García is an ICREA Research Professor at the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). Her research focuses on the relevance of indigenous and local knowledge for understanding and addressing environmental and climate crises. She lived among the Tsimane, an indigenous population of the Bolivian Amazon, from 1999 to 2004 and has conducted fieldwork in Spain, India, Mexico, Cameroon, Indonesia and Senegal. Reyes-García is a member of the Laboratory of Analysis of Social-Ecological Systems in a Global World (LASEG), a research group that analyses the impacts of global change on socio-ecological systems.
She has co-authored over 250 articles in indexed journals, co-edited three books and supervised 20 doctoral theses. Her research has been funded twice by the European Science Council: to study the relationships between biological and cultural diversity using a cross-cultural approach (ERC-Starting) and to study the contribution of indigenous and local knowledge to research on the impacts of climate change (ERC-Consolidator). She has contributed to several reports for decision-makers, including the IPBES Global Report, the IPBES Transformational Change Report, the IPBES-IPCC Joint Report and the UNESCO Earth Network.
In 2020, she received the Narcís Monturiol Medal for Scientific Merit, awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2021 she was elected an international member of the US National Academy of Sciences and in 2022 a member of the French Academy of Agriculture.
