Seminar description

Past studies have shown the distribution of parks is not always equitably distributed in urban areas, raising concerns about environmental equity and justice. Access can also vary locally according to both supply (park area or facilities) and the potential demand (population surrounding the park) by using the enhanced two-step floating catchment area method. This presentation will be on the results of a study aimed at verifying the existence of environmental inequities for four population groups (children, seniors, low-income individuals, and visible minorities) according to park proximity and potential park congestion in the Greater Montreal area. Three accessibility measures were calculated: closest park (shortest walking distance) and two gradient E2SFCA (hectares and facilities per inhabitants). The results show no drastic degrees of inequity over Greater Montreal but do highlight differences in regard to potentially crowded parks in the area.

About the BCNUEJ Seminar Series

Launched in October 2020, the BCNUEJ Seminar Series aims to provide PhD students the opportunity to present their work while also providing a forum for discussion on environmental justice and sustainability topics. Each seminar is free and open to the public, with the goal of appealing to our broader ICTA communities and beyond. Seminars are held every three weeks and also feature guest speakers from outside our institutions. To enable colleagues from other countries to participate, most seminars are hybrid events.
