"Earthquakes and tsunamis: a mathematical approach" Exhibition

Terratrèmols i tsunamis

Recently, seismic phenomena of significant magnitude have occurred in various parts of the planet, such as Morocco, Turkey or Afghanistan. To better understand the mathematical reasons associated with these events, the Center for Mathematical Research has prepared this exhibition that will be present between March 11 and April 12 in the Science and Technology Library.

We associate earthquakes with destruction and chaos. This exhibition, however, aims to show part of the mathematical reason and order present in these phenomena and their effects. Images and numerical simulations are used to illustrate concepts in wave propagation, statistics, nonlinear processes, geometry, and complex systems.

Likewise, a series of original maps from the personal collection of the exhibition curator shows the progress in the assessment of seismic hazard over the last two centuries.

Associated with the exhibition, researcher Álvaro González Gómez will make a presentation at the Espai BCT on April 9 at 1 p.m. which we encourage you to attend.
