History of Science

La física en la dictadura. Físicos, cultura y poder en España 1939-1975

Author: Néstor Herran and Xavier Roqué are the editors of this collective volume on the history of physics in Franco's Spain. Herran, PhD in History of Science (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), lectures at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris, where his research deals with the history of twentieth century physics and the national and transnational articulation of contemporary science. Xavier Roqué is a lecturer with the UAB's Department of Philosophy and a member of its Centre for the History of Science (CEHIC). His research deals with the history of modern physics, currently focusing on Spain, the cultural value of science and gender relations in science. He has also published his own Catalan and Spanish translations of classic works on physics by Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, and Marie Curie.

Summary: This volume brings together the work of twenty historians, which was presented at the symposium "History of Physics in Twentieth-century Spain: conclusions and predictions", held in Barcelona in December, 2011. This book deals with the problem of determining how physics fitted historically into Franco's dictatorship. Instead of reviewing the chronologies of progress or delay, the authors focus on the relationship between the laboratory, the classroom, the corridors of power and the nuclear plant, spaces for generating knowledge, exercising authority, communicating and teaching, or in other words, they look at physics in relation to culture and power to see how a scientific discipline and a totalitarian political system interact. Among the issues addressed are the relationship between physics and industry, physics teaching, the physics community organization and the discipline international relations. The book proposes a novel approach to the connections between physics, culture, economics and politics in contemporary Spain.
