Conservar aprovechando. Cómo integrar el cambio global en la gestión de los montes españoles

Author: Fourteen institutions, including the UAB and CREAF, have conducted a five years macroresearch study on Mediterranean systems called MONTES, with the aim of understanding how changes in climate, atmospheric composition, land use and fire regime affect the Mediterranean mountains.

Summary: The fundamental driving force behind the book is the modification of interactions between global change and mountain through forest management. In the first part of the book there is a description of the main factors of global change and how to detect them: changes in atmospheric composition, climate change, changes in land use and fragmentation, forest fires and introduction of invasive species. The second part presents case studies which apply the principles of management based on the forecast. The book is available online.

Physics

Las raíces cósmicas de la vida

Author: Josep M. Trigois astrophysicist and works at the Institute of Space Sciences (CSIC- IECC), where he studied comets, asteroids and meteorites with the aim of delveing into the physicochemical processes occurring at the beginning of the solar system. He has published dissemination books, scientific papers and dissemination articles, for which he has received several awards.

Summary: Is life on Earth a unique phenomenon, a cosmic accident? Or is it rather a "natural" feature of the universe that occurs under certain conditions, not necessarily exclusive to our planet? To answer this important question, scientists turn their attention to comets and meteorites, which contain valuable information about the overall composition of the universe and about the chemistry of carbon, the base of life as we know it. From a meticulous scientific work, Josep Maria Trigo -who is working on the recovery and analysis of the last two meteorites fallen in Spain- presents a clear and updated account of the amazing amount of information that an extraterrestrial rock can offer us about the origins of life.
