Summary of data from the Department of Surgery


The department coordinates, according to the teaching program of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the teaching of the following areas knowledge: Surgery, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Traumatology & Orthopedics and Urology. In recent years it has been involved in the construction and transformation of study curriculum to the 'Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior' (European Higher Education Area) requirements.

Bachelor's Degree Teaching:

The department provides teaching in Medicine and Physiotherapy Grade degree and in Medicine bachelor's degree (that has become extinct in 2014-15 course) of Medicine Faculty, in Speech Therapy Grade degree (Psychology Faculty) and in Medicine Grade degree shared with UPF (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) that is given in Parc Salut Mar Unit.

Postgraduated Teaching:

It also organizes and develops the doctoral program in Surgery and the programs of its own masters of the knowledge areas of the department.

Doctoral Program:

The objective of the doctorate is to have an adequate framework for the achievement and transmission of the knowledge necessary for the training of doctoral students in order to carry out the doctoral thesis.

Currently the Doctorate of Surgery is regulated by two Royal Decrees:

  • RD 1393/2007 (On the way to extinction until July/2017)
  • RD 99/ 2011 (current)

The current doctoral program is the PhD in Surgery and Morphological Sciences (ruled by the RD 99/2011) and is presented jointly with the Department of Morphological Sciences. Its coordinator is Dr. Juan Morote Robles.

Our department has a high number of doctoral students and thesis defenses, with an average of 30-35 theses per academic year.

All the teaching and researcher staff of the department is attached to one of the departmental units that compose it.

The Department of Surgery is included in the agreements that the Faculty of Medicine of the UAB has established with the university hospitals where it teaches.

In the field of doctorate, the Surgery program has health research institutes / foundations that exist in the teaching units of Vall d'Hebron, Germans Trias i Pujol and Parc Salut Mar, which have incorporated in their research activity the department professors.

On the other hand, the different specific masters of the department have established agreements of collaboration with other institutions for the development of the teaching, as for the practices of the students.



The department receives a budget for its operation and the fee derived from its research and postgraduate activities.

It also manages the economic projects of some of its specifics masters organized by the department.

These budgets are managed and settled each fiscal year in accordance with the regulations corresponding to a public institution.


As a basic research unit, it promotes and supports the activities and initiatives of research and knowledge transfer of its academic staff.

In the Department of Surgery there are 25 university professors (9 CU (professors) and 16 TU (tenured professors)), of which 22 have some research section and 18 professors have live sections (72% of university professors).
