Going Extreme. History, narratives and the threat to Europe's democracies
Description:
As part of the ARENAS (Analysis of and Responses to Extremist Narratives) project, financed by the Horizon Europe programme, the UAB's Centre for Studies on Dictatorships and Democracies (CEDID) has organised the international congress Going Extreme. History, Narratives and the Threat to Democracies in Europe, which will take place on 25, 26 and 27 September. The congress will be held at the Mirador Hall of the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. The main researcher of the ARENAS project is Steven Forti, lecturer in the Department of Modern and Early Modern History at the UAB and researcher at the CEDID.

Inauguration of the exhibition "Agde, el camp dels catalans (1939-1942)"
Description:
Laia Arañó, researcher at the Centre for Studies on Dictatorships and Democracies of the UAB and lecturer of the Department of Modern and Early Modern History, is the commissioner of the exhibition on Catalan exiles in France after the Spanish Civil War, entitled "Agde, el camp dels catalans (1939-1942)". The exhibition will remain on display until 11 November at the headquarters of the Comissions Obreres de Catalunya building in Barcelona. The inauguration will take place on 26 September at 6:00 p.m. and will include the participation of Arañó and that of Memorial Democràtic President Jordi Font.

12th Asian Studies Reunion 2024
Description:
The UAB's Centre for Studies and Research of East Asia (CERAO) has worked jointly with Casa Àsia to organise the 12th Asian Studies Meeting, which will take place on 27 September from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Aula Magna of the UAB Casa Convalescència, in Barcelona. This annual academic meeting brings together representatives of Spanish universities and undergraduate and graduate programmes in Asian studies or languages, or ones that will be implemented in the future. The meeting will include the participation of UAB Rector Javier Lafuente, and Vice-Rector for International Relations and Language Policies Laura Santamaria.
In this edition, Tina Chen, director of Penn State's Global Asias Initiative at Pennsylvania State University, will deliver the inaugural lecture, entitled “Global Asias: Problems, Possibilities, Praxis”, which will be introduced and moderated by Blai Guarné, director of CERAO at the UAB. The lecturer will discuss the philosophy, principles and practices that guide research in the emerging field known as global Asias. The aim of the lecture is to consider its contribution to the way we approach objects, methods and practices in the study of Asia from different disciplines such as ethnic studies, migration and diaspora studies or interdisciplinary studies.
After the inaugural conference, the round table “The transfer of knowledge in Asian studies in Spain” will take place. Representatives of the Asian Studies Reflection Group, formed by academics from Spanish universities and coordinated by Casa Asia, will share their thoughts on the challenges, actions and social value of knowledge transfer in Asian studies and on the transfer of knowledge in the social sciences and humanities. They will also talk about the development of the guide to Asian Studies in Spain: Guía de los Estudios Asiáticos en España: análisis, evolución y perspectivas (Aranzadi 2023).

UAB Research Night
Description:
The European Research Night is a public event dedicated to scientific dissemination. The goal is to bring research, innovation and the people involved closer to society and people of all ages in a simple and leisurely manner.
This year Research Night will take place on 27 September from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and the UAB campus will now be one of the headquarters of activities of the Barcelona node. The activities include workshops and demonstrations, micro-talks and conversations with experts, visits to laboratories and an astronomical observation with a telescope from the Institute of Space Sciences.

Conference: "Is my democracy your democracy?"
Description:
As part of the exhibition entitled "És la meva democràcia la teva democràcia?" [Is my democracy your democracy?], organised by the UAB School for a Culture of Peace in the La Model prison, a conference will take place on 28 Septmeber from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to reflect on the benefits and limitations of democracy with the help of experiences from people who have seen democratic transitions in different European countries. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
