The World Health Organization defines stress as the physiological reactions that prepare the body for action. In a stressful situation, the pituitary-adrenal axis and the vegetative nervous system are activated. Thus, stress is a natural and necessary response to survival.

However, when stress occurs repetitively, it generates chronic hypercortisolemia. In animal models it has been shown that hypercortisolemia can be neurotoxic for some brain structures.

Therefore, in a time as complex as ours, with constant and intense environmental demands, the stress response could end up affecting our quality of life and manifest itself in the form of different pathologies.

An example could be depression, an affective disorder of high prevalence nowadays. Scientific evidence suggests that acute and chronic stress is associated with an increase in inflammatory activity and with an intensification of attention processes focused on negative information. Both processes are predictive of depressive symptoms.

Therefore, understanding the interrelationship between inflammatory activity and emotional cognition in a context of stress would allow the optimization of depression therapeutic strategies.

To deepen the knowledge of both pathologies and how they interrelate, as well as the research challenges for their treatment, will be the objectives of this year's CORE Seminar. We look forward to your participation!
